The Orchard Book of Roman Myths
by
Geraldine McCaughrean
Illustrator: Emma Chichester Clark
This is another volume in Orchard books' series of myths, which has been retold by Geraldine McCaughrean and fabulously illustrated by Emma Chichester Clark.
There are 15 stories to choose from: some of them well-known like Romulus and Remus, the twin boys who founded Rome, and some less so, such as Chains of Love, the story of how Venus, goddess of love, married Vulcan.
Stolen Wives tells the story of the carrying-off of the Sabine women, who belonged to the most ancient and powerful Italian tribe to be absorbed into the Roman Empire. Noticing a distinct lack of women within their new city of Rome, the Romans invited the Sabines to visit them and join in the celebrations. Once the visitors had sat down, the women were unceremoniously kidnapped.
All the tales included in this book will fascinate young readers. There is a brief notes section about the stories at the end of the book and a complete list of Roman gods and goddesses for quick reference.
