The Wolves in the Walls

by

Neil Gaiman
Illustrator: Dave McKean

When Lucy hears noises in the walls of her home, she tries to warn her family that the wolves are coming. However, they do not heed her warnings – until it is too late. McKean uses a combination of collage, photography, painting and drawing, with a palette of deep reds and browns, to set the scene for this frightening tale.

The expressive artwork reflects the family’s fear and panic as they flee from their home and the text dances erratically across each page, adding to the tension.

This is definitely not a tale for bedtime reading, but there are moments of humour in both text and illustration, which will be adored by courageous readers.
