City of Shadows

by Celia Rees

Originally published as the first two titles in the series Haunts, this repackaging exercise makes available some earlier books by Celia Rees, who has recently won great critical acclaim with Witch Child.

In 'Midsummer', the first of the two stories, Davy, who appears to have Second Sight, is persuaded against his will to accompany his sister and his cousins, Tom and Elinor, on a Ghost Tour. Unwittingly, he walks through a 'portal' into another world, where he meets up with a company of ghosts, including Jack Cade, the highwayman.

As Davy battles with the evil Judge to return to his own world, he makes a sworn enemy of The Lady. She returns in the second story, 'Hallowe'en', accompanied by her ghost crew, who kidnap Davy's little sister, Emma, while everyone is out Trick or Treating. Both stories have a convincing atmosphere of mystery and some excellent scary moments.
