Book of the month: The Adult by Joe Stretch

'Told in flashbacks and forwards, plotting out an alternative history of the nineties and of a family, with humour, humility and verve, this is an engaging and entirely brilliant whirlwind of a book, told with confidence and ease...'

A close second in the book of the month stakes is the immensely inventive Hawthorn & Child but I'm holding that one back for my books of the year post. The main concern this month seems to be family. From the Edwardian to the rural and dysfunctional to the starry Allbrights in The Adult, August is a hotbed (online, not outside - have you seen outside? No? Don't...) of colourful families and the whacky ways they show each other how much they love them.
