Older readers - find your next book to share

Older readers - find your next book to share
Posted 26 April 2012 by The Bookstart Team

We've already given you a few great ways you can share stories with your child, but here are our suggestions for how older readers can keep their Bookstart 20 pledges.

Think of the countless dinner parties, casual conversations and informal times you've been recommended a book by a friend or a colleague or a family member. Whether it's as a present or through a link to a webpage or someone handing you the book and saying, 'you MUST read this, it's just so… brilliant.'

That's how we imagine the Booktrust website to be. Bookstart 20 may be celebrating the Bookstart programme and books for little ones, but as part of your pledge, you can share books with adults and older teenagers too. One of the joys of sharing a book with anyone is trying to bestow the magic that reading that book gave you on someone else.

B
ookfinder

The Booktrust bookfinder features thousands of books, so you're sure to find something to inspire you. You can search by genre (such as crime, romance, literary fiction, short stories), country (if you have a particular interest in translated fiction or you're going on holiday to that part of the world), comedy - books from across the spectrum of what is currently on offer.

Got a favourite author? You'll can search by their name and find which similar books we recommend. The bookfinder is a comprehensive hub of recommended reads for everyone.

Accompanying the bookfinder, we have our own books we like, which features critical recommendations of the best books out that month. For April, we have short stories from Lucy Wood, a follow up to the impeccable Stasiland and a non-fiction book about the science of creativity. Go and check them out!

Facebook and Twitter

Often you'll find the Booktrust web team sharing their favourite reads on Twitter and Facebook too, so do follow us if you want to see what we're all reading here in Book House. We're always sharing books, by simply tweeting about them, telling our colleagues what we're enjoying and by following the recommendations of others on social media. It's a great place to find out about what other people are enjoying.

Prizes

Did you know that we manage many prizes too, like the Orange Prize for Fiction and the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize among others. These prizes we manage are often where we find out about books we might like too. So do check out our prizes pages to find out who the winners, shortlists and longlists are whether anything there takes your fancy.

Take a moment today to think of the best book you've read in recent years and whether you've ever recommended that book to someone. That counts as sharing. So maybe recommend the same book to someone today! And take some time out to browse the Booktrust site: there's lots there for you to discover.
