How Booktrust has helped

  • In 2011-12 Booktrust gifted:

     - Almost 3 million book packs
     - Over 5.2 million books
     - To 2.9 million children

 

  • 47.2 million books have been gifted by Booktrust since 1992
  • For every £1 of public funding Booktrust generates £4 in private funds through our publisher partners
  • ‘In 2009-10 for every £1 invested, Bookstart generates a social return of £25’ (Just Economics, 2010)
  • ‘Enjoying reading is more important for children's educational success than their family's socio-economic status’ (OECD, 2002)

 

Early years

  • In 2011-12 Booktrust gifted: 

     - Bookstart packs of books to 1.5 million babies, toddlers and preschoolers

     - 1.3 million Bookstart packs in England

     - 70,000 bilingual Bookstart packs in Wales
     - 50,000 Bookstart packs in Northern Ireland
     - 1,000 Bookshine packs for sight impaired children
     - 1,000 Booktouch packs for hearing impaired children
     - 600,000 £1 book tokens in Bookstart Baby packs

  • 9.5 million children have received 33 million books from Bookstart since 1992
  • Bookstart produces baby packs in 29 different languages
  • The Bookstart model has been adopted by 20 countries across the world
  • In 2012, over 3,000 families in Wales took part in the bilingual Bookstart Super Box programme
  • ‘75% of parents share books as a direct result of receiving Bookstart packs’ (ICM and the Fatherhood Institute, 2010)
  • The Bookstart Bear Club has over 78,000 members in libraries across England and 18,000 online members

Schools

In 2012-13, Booktrust's targeted schools offers are reaching more than 220,000 children in primary and secondary schools.


Primary
  • Booktime has gifted more than 9 million books to Reception children since it was launched in 2006
  • Over 1.45 million books will be gifted to 731,000 children in their first year of school through Booktime in 2012-13
  • For the first time in 2012, 35,000 Reception children in Wales will receive bilingual Booktime packs
  • In 2012-13, Booktrust will be reaching over 35,000 children in Wales with our new Foundation Phase Programme, Pori Drwy Stori
  • Booktrust works with over 100,000 children in 1,160 primary schools through The Ant Club

 

Secondary
  • Bookbuzz will reach 204,000 Year 7 children in secondary schools in 2012
  • Booktrust works with around 120,000 children in 335 secondary schools through Beyond Booked Up
  • 3,800 secondary schools will be receiving a free School Library Pack in 2012
  • Booked Up reached over 3.25 million Year 7 students between 2007 and 2011

 

Looked-after children

  • In 2012, Letterbox Club sent parcels to 5,237 looked-after children in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland
  • Letterbox Club has sent 121,890 parcels to 20,315 children across the UK since the programme began in 2007

Children’s Laureate – Julia Donaldson

During Julia Donaldson’s 2012 Laureate Library Tour of 35 libraries in Scotland, England and Wales she met nearly 4,000 children and there were over 250 items of media coverage.


Prizes

  • Booktrust managed prizes and awards recognised and celebrated the work of 191 authors and illustrators in 2011 and 2012
  • Booktrust supports the art of short fiction, with a total of 55 short stories being celebrated since 2011 through The Sunday Times EFG Private Bank Short Story Award and BBC Short Story Award
  • Over 1,000 children from 42 schools nationwide have helped to judge and shadow the Blue Peter Book Award and the Roald Dahl Funny Prize in 2011 and 2012
