Projects

Booktrust has created and administered a range of projects and campaigns designed to help people of all ages and backgrounds to access books and give them opportunities to enjoy and be confident in their reading and writing: from the Children's Laureate, awarded every two years to highlight the importance of exceptional children's authors in creating the readers of tomorrow, to Bookbite, designed to inspire people over 60 to engage with reading and writing, which gave out over 100,000 copies of its magazine.
Summer Active
Summer Active aims to promote children's enjoyment of books and encourage them to see reading as a pleasurable activity rather than a chore. The move from primary to secondary school is particularly important in the development of reading skills and this programme will help support children during that time that have not reached their expected reading level in English. It will encourage reading for pleasure and help bring the experience, enjoyment and confidence of reading to all.
Our work with disadvantaged children
Booktrust works with disadvantaged children in a number of ways.
We believe that with our targeted programmes designed to highlight the importance of reading for pleasure, we can affect the lives of children from diverse educational, social or economic backgrounds.
Together, we can use the power of stories and reading to unlock the potential of the UK's most disadvantaged children.
Bedtime Reading
Sharing books with your baby or child and reading aloud with them at bedtime is a fun, warm and loving experience.

Aimed at children in years 5 and 6 in its first year, Read for My School is a brand new national schools reading competition from The Pearson Foundation and Booktrust, with support from the Department for Education.
The Short Story
We promote the short story through advocacy, reader and writer development including competition and magazine listings, writing tips, reviews of short story collections and forthcoming titles, news and events and our involvement with prizes such as The BBC National Short Story Award (previously the National Short Story Prize) and The Sunday Times EFG Private Bank Short Story Award.
Translated Fiction
Booktrust is committed to supporting translated fiction. We want readers to discover the best novels from around the world that are available in English translations across a broad range of genres and a wide range of countries and languages.

Bookbite
Bookbite was a project encouraging people over 60 to discover new authors and genres, to try a range of creative writing activities and to interact with others online to share stories and book reviews.
Get London Reading
Get London Reading was a campaign run by Booktrust, in association with the Mayor of London, to encourage Londoners to make more time for reading, and to celebrate London as an international centre for books. Its legacy is an interactive online map of London with books associated with London locations. The project and website are now closed.
