The Jura Malt Whisky Writer Retreat

Jura is one of the most remote and wild of the Scottish islands. Famously, it is the place where George Orwell found inspiration to write 1984.

Now Scottish Book Trust, Isle of Jura Malt Whisky and the Times are working together to offer writers the opportunity to spend a month living and writing on the idyllic island of Jura. Each writer who is selected will receive a month's exclusive use of the luxurious distillery lodge, a bursary and travel expenses.

In 2007 the Retreat was awarded to Will Self, Philip Gourevitch and Janice Galloway. Follow in their footsteps and apply to spend time on this beautiful island.

In 2008 three writers of fiction, poetry or literary non-fiction will get the opportunity to spend a month on Jura:

July/August - a published writer from or living in the UK
August/September - a published writer living in Scotland
October - a new unpublished writer
