Booked Up is a national programme that encourages Year 7 children to read for pleasure by providing every child with a free book.

Booked Up is run by Booktrust and is inspired by the national Bookstart and Booktime programmes, which aim to provide free books to every baby and reception pupil in the UK.

It is funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, and generously supported by children’s book publishers Barrington Stoke, Bloomsbury, Chicken House, Faber, Macmillan, Puffin, Quercus Books, Random House, Ransom, Scholastic, Templar and Usborne.

Booked Up’s goal is to encourage and support reading for pleasure among children in the Year 7 age group, by providing each Year 7 pupil in England with a free book from a list of 12 specially selected titles.

We are delighted that the Department for Children, Schools and Families has decided to continue their support of Booktrust’s three bookgifting programmes. To see more about Booked Up 2009, go to the Booked Up website.

New research

A survey of over 3,000 parents, carers and children in the UK commissioned for Booktime and Booked Up has found that the love of reading is growing among children.

However, the research, which was published on 20 October 2009, also showed that 3% of parents and carers never or rarely read with their children. For those who do, just one in three read with their children on a daily basis.

You can read the research results in full on the Booked Up website.
